Is it just around the corner?

Well could it be that we are edging ever closer to Spring? Me thinks so.

This morning two ducks took up residence in our garden pond. On top of that one of our regular garden visitors arrived back yesterday. Here she is waiting for my husband to throw her some braeburn apples.

Who would think that living bang smack in the middle of Inverness that we would get visitors like this. So bring it on, this Spring thing   We are truly blessed if Spring means visitors like this.

  1. I would love to have deer in my garden! Jealous!

  2. Yes we are really fortunate. She’s been coming for about 10 years now and regularly brings her calves back with her. At the moment she has two, a male and a female, but they’re too shy to be photographed. It’s got to the stage that if you go out on the deck with a pan and a wooden spoon she hears you bang it and comes running, stands under the deck and waits for her apples. They MUST be braeburns though as they’re the only ones she eats

  3. Great news to se her back once more. There must be something special she is looking out for. Perhpas it is all the apples. After being with you, and to see the route she uses, it is amazing how she manages to get safely to the garden. xx

    • We are pleased to see her back. We had been quite worried about her as we hadn’t seen her for a while.

  4. What sort of deer are they? They look like muntjac but surely not as far north as you are?

    • I believe she is a red deer, although we also have a male sika deer who visits and he’s got wonderful markings. We haven’t seen any muntjac but I know that they are quite a distinctive shape and they have distinctive black lines on their heads. Our wee deer’s coat looks pretty dull at the moment, but it’s lovely to watch it changing colour.

      • Correction my husband just text me to say that she’s not a red dear – but an old dear (yes she is getting on a bit I’ll give him that!). There apparently has been some debate but it seems to have settled on the fact that she’s a roe deer – which are slightly smaller than the red deer.

  5. Most neighborhoods in our fair city have deer. They devastate most yards and gardens but what are they to do? We invaded their space and they have nowhere to go. They’re beautiful and I love to watch them.

    • Hi Pat. Yes lots of our neighbours don’t like having the deer around. We are quite happy and have pretty much got the garden set up so that they are unable to do too much destruction to the garden. Thankfully as our house is built into the hill we also have a top garden that they have no access to. Although we have caught them climbing the stairs and my husband found one standing on the deck looking in the hall window once. Terrified our cats

      • That’s funny. So Peter gets this feeling of being watched. Oh, it’s just a resident deer. It’s good that you can accommodate them. My daughter has an incredible yard and she has carefully chosen plants (she’s a bit of a plant expert) that deer won’t eat. It can be done. And lots of people feed them corn in the hope that they won’t eat other things. I don’t think it works.

  6. With global climate change, our “winter” has been all wonky–freezing, then warming, then freezing. Bouncing all over the place. And hardly a snowflake to be found. My guess is that on about the end of March we’ll see some major snow storms!

  7. Oh, they are so beautiful…what a blessing (even at the expense of the garden). Thank you for sharing this :)
Now for a laugh, I was so mesmerised by the photo I had absentmindedly begun to read your post thinking, ducks? maybe she means bucks? Where’s the pond? Why would bucks be in a pond anyway? Oh dear, I need sleep.
