iWrite
OK here’s the thing. Lots of people say that blogging isn’t really writing. I disagree, but then I’m fairly new to all of this. It all comes down to how you view things. Before I started blogging the only thing I really wrote was poetry. Poetry was my thing and I can still rattle one-off at the drop of a hat – I’m not saying it’s any good mind, but boy can I get things to rhyme. Anyhow I’ve been thinking….. In the summer last year I bravely took my first creative writing class. It was very, very scary and I felt incredibly brave. The class was taken by a teacher who taught me in Glasgow when I was 15. So years later I found my life full circle back in his writing class. This time though I was a fully fledged adult but inside I was still a petrified 15-year-old wondering whether or not I would be able to deliver the goods.
The thing is though even though it was scary to sit in that group, put pen to paper and THEN have to read you work out to EVERYONE I really enjoyed it. I also discovered that when I’m put in that kind of situation I am surprised with what I come up with. I also marvelled at what everyone else came up with. It was just a joy.
Of late I’ve realised that I really miss my creative writing class. Unfortunately I was unable to sign up for the next round of classes because it was just too much with my studies. But I miss it.
Lately, as I’ve been walking to work my mind has been prompting me to write – to be creative. Now there are a few bloggers who read my posts who are also writers. Actually you’re all writers because you blog – there I’ve said it – enough of this snobbery. However there are some bloggers who read my posts who have gone the extra mile. Carridwen and her fabby cauldron is a one woman literary powerhouse, Lorna with her laugh out loud tales is inches away from being published and Lynda kindly invites me to her book launches. Can you believe I have a friend whose book I can download on a Kindle. If I had a Kindle that is. But how cool is that!
So, this writing lark. Ok I’ll be honest. I don’t know if I’m any good. What I do know is that back in my writing class where you had feel the fear and write like hell the bottom line was you’ll never know if you don’t dip your toe in the water. I’ve decided to hatch a plan……..
If I can’t sign up to attend a creative writing class how about having a virtual one. My plan is once a week write a post with a wee thing I’ve written. Rather than being here on my own some in this virtual creative writing I thought a few of you might sign up to it. It being my ‘Something for the Weekend’. It can be a story, a poem whatever really all you have to do is post what you’ve written on Saturday. I’m up for trying it for four Saturdays. What do you think? Are you up for it?
I’m going to give it a go. I might not be the next JK Rowling but hell a gal’s got to start somewhere.

Actually, you can buy my books as paperbacks too if you don’t have a kindle. Plug plug
Creative writing courses are fab and the OU does a great one, actually. Blogging is a fantastic way to develop writing skills so keep up the great work.
‘Something for the weekend’ sounds great fun and I’d love to be part of it. Providing I remember… My memory has a mind of its own that’s for sure.
Great post as usual.

I have a voucher left over from Christmas and going to use it to buy your new book. I’ve been going to bed slightly earlier and spending time reading. Looking forward to it. Glad you’re going to give “Something for the Weekend” a go – yay!
There still people who think everyone should be expert writers, and correct others for doing things wrong.
I told one of last week in a new blog for condeming the writers skill.
Something for the weekend, that sounds fine.
I am in the middle of writing my first story, its si-fi.
Good for you Harry – intrigued to learn your taking the plunge into writing a book. I’m nowhere close to that but maybe some day I will – actually let me correct that, someday I definitely will! I hope this means you’ll maybe post “Something for the Weekend”
A book, no no a story for my blog, never did one before.
I’ll think something up for Saturday, i hope
Yay. Welcome aboard. Look forward to reading.
Good on you Harry. I’ll look forward to it.
Great idea, Jacqueline, although alas I really do not have time to join you at the moment. I don’t know why people would say blogging is not really writing. What do they think it is – finger painting? Of course it’s writing and for what it’s worth, I think you write really well. I wouldn’t keep coming back if I didn’t!
Joanna you are such tonic. Thank you for your kind words. I can always count on you for your uplifting words and inspiration. Watch this space for Saturday – no idea what will transpire but will give it a go.
Your story sounds like mine in reference to your Creative Writing class. Only I took a second class years later and it wasn’t as fulfilling. The first teacher I had was wonderful. Something for the weekend sounds great. It will keep me writing. Any guidelines I need to know or do we just post under “Something for Weekend’ heading on Saturday?
Yay welcome aboard.
No guidelines. That’s what I liked about our writing class. Just write something, whether it be a poem a short story, whatever really and post it on Saturday as “Something for the Weekend”. If you paste a link in mine by leaving a comment on my post then everyone else that’s joining in can follow the links.
Hiya Jacqueline….I loved my creative writing class and that kick started me and blogging is writing…hell even a letter is writing! I’m up for your Saturday postings…great idea…Jane x
Hooray, welcome aboard. I look forward to reading your piece on Saturday. Don’t forget to put a link in the comments on mine, that way others can find your post too.
Will do…now I need to write something! A B C…….J x
Jacqueline, I’m so honored that you’d mention me among real writers! I only took one course in writing in college beyond Freshman English. And exactly how do you measure “inches” over there in Scotland? I hope it resembles more like kilometers! But thanks for being so flattering. (I have to match the level of your flattery with the same level of self-deprecation–it’s a flaw of mine!)
If you put words on paper or screen, you’re a writer. If someone (you or someone else) publishes all those put-together words, then you’re an author.
I think it’s great that you’re starting this “Every Saturday” endeavor. I actually put up my stories each week–the collection to be massaged into an actual manuscript sometime this year. I only have a few more to go. Then what am I going to blog about?
You are definitely close to realising your literary dream – kilometres don’t even come into it. As for what you blog about next – well that’s all part of the fun. I’ll be sure to be reading.
As will many others.
Sounds like fun. Writers come in all forms. I don’t think you are trying to compete with professional writers who have to stand up to an editors scrutiny. Just be you and see what happens:)
Sounds like a plan
Oooh, what a great idea! I want to say that I’ll join you on Something for the weekend, but I am already struggling to find any time to blog, let alone write anything else at the moment, so will probably pass. But will eagerly wait for your posts!
Aw thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to read my posts.
[...] Jacqueline at 'Maturestudenthanginginthere' has suggested a Saturday morning virtual creative writing group. Someone (rather foolishly) had suggested to Jacqueline that blogging was not proper writing and never one to duck a challenge this ‘Something for the weekend’ was her witty and positive response. [...]
Jane has written a beautiful poem – click on her link to read her ‘Something for the Weekend” post.
[...] Maturestudenthanginginthere is hosting a virtual creative writing class for the next few Saturdays. With an accelerated heartbeat, I’m participating. I love poetry but rarely share what I have written. For the next few Saturdays, I will share. If you’re here for my usual witty (humor me) posts, you’ll have to wait for another day. [...]

I think I shall give this a shot.
Delores
Welcome aboard. I’m just dipping my toe in the water with this, but it’s lovely to have others giving it a go. I look forward to reading what you write.
Jacqueline
Delores sent me. I’ll give it a shot! I miss CW courses too! Great blog, btw, you’re a good writer!
Great! The more the merrier. Thank you for stopping by and leaving such a lovely comment.
I believe that writing is not dependent on the platform, the publisher, or the the means by which such writing is shared. A blog is a wonderful place in which to share one’s thoughts and writings… and what matters is what you have to say, and if one has learned how to tell it. I would be interested to hear just what is difficult for you in the act of writing. And in any case, wish you great luck and success.
I think the difficult thing about writing is being brave enough to create opportunities for others to read what you write. I think that is why blogging is so wonderful because lovely people like yourself stop by and comment. The interaction adds a whole different dimension which is truly wonderful.
